What to Consider When Hiring A Painting Contractor

Home or commercial painting, no matter how big the job, is a job that needs to be done right the first time. And just like most jobs that require you to hire a contractor, there are many options to choose from. If you want quality work that looks great, lasts a long time, and gets done in a timely and professional manner, there are some things you should consider when searching for the right paint contractor for your next project.

Do they have insurance?

This is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a contractor. Even though you might have insurance that covers accidents that happen on your property, it is the contractor’s responsibility to also have good insurance. In order to protect your property from any damage done by the contractor, you should ensure that they have comprehensive business liability.

You should also confirm with the contractor that they carry workman’s compensation to protect workers while on your property. Without it, you may be liable for any accidents or injuries that may occur on your property. Before signing a contract or beginning work with a contractor, ask for proof of both insurances.

Do they have positive online reviews?

You can tell a lot about a company from online reviews, though you should take the reviews with a grain of salt. Of course there are two sides to every story, so you will have to sift through reviews and decide for yourself what seems true. That being said though, if you go to their online profiles and all you see are negative reviews and comments, that’s a red flag and you should probably move on.

Do they subcontract, or is it all done by employees?

Something that most people won’t think to ask is if the individuals that are actually doing the work are employees of the company you are hiring, or if they are subcontractors. It’s safer to go with a company that has employees on staff doing the work on your property instead of them hiring subcontractors, as the latter could get messy when it comes to insurance. The subcontractors would require their own insurance, and the property owner could be liable for any accidents or injuries that happen onsite.

To protect yourself and your property, and keep things a little more simple, consider hiring a company that has employees on staff doing the work.

Do they provide a detailed estimate?

Getting an estimate for the work you are requesting is a common practice when hiring contractors. This gives you an idea of the time and money that will be spent on your project. You can seek out estimates from multiple contractors to help make your final decision, as price is often a major factor. Keep in mind though, an estimate is not a guarantee or a contract, actual prices could end up being higher or lower than what was estimated, but it will provide you with a good idea of what you will be spending.

What materials and techniques will be used?

Before deciding on a contractor or beginning work, ask them to specify which materials they will be using and what their scope of work will be. You are investing in your property and you want to make sure that the materials being used will hold up over time and look the way you want it to. Oftentimes contractors will opt for cheaper products, and that means you may not get the results you are seeking.

Further, asking about the scope of work will give you a look at the prep work the contractor will do prior to painting. Repairing current damages such as holes, flaking, mildew, or rough spots before they paint will ensure a smooth finish and lasting results.

Need a Professional Painter?

Asking the questions above will help you find someone that you trust, who will follow through on what they say they will do, and who will get you the beautiful and lasting results you desire.
